Hygiene and food safety have been called into question at a Liverpool takeaway after it was given a damning rating by health inspectors.
Representatives from Liverpool Council’s environmental health team were left less than impressed when they visited Oriental Super Bar on Moss Way, Croxteth last month. With a number of serious concerns raised, the business - which held a five out of five rating back in 2015 - has been told urgent improvements are required and handed a zero out of five mark.
Officials raised issues around how the business rates on hygienic food handling. This includes the takeaway’s hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.
Major improvement was also deemed to be necessary in how the Oriental Super Bar manages food safety. Among the requirements for this include a system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.
Improvement is also required in how the business keeps the facilities and building clean, according to a publicly available rating summary on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website. The takeaway was handed a mark of three out of five and deemed generally satisfactory on its last inspection in 2021.
That was an improvement from the warning of improvement needing to be made in 2019 when a mark of two out of five was awarded. This was preceded by a full five out of five just four years earlier.
An Oriental Super Bar spokesperson said items were left in a communal area from a neighbouring business which was “a bit difficult.” They added: “They’re trying to sort it out with environmental health and property management.
“The chippy tried to keep the place clean and clean the communal area but it’s been quite difficult.” Oriental Super Bar has the right to appeal the award granted by local authority as well as a reinspection.
The business will first need to contact Liverpool Council for a breakdown of why the low rating was awarded. If this is still felt to be wrong or unfair, management can appeal to the FSA in writing to challenge the decision.
A right to reply will also be published on the FSA website alongside its rating.
