Liverpool suffer Hugo Ekitike injury blow ahead of season-defining fixtures

Liverpool will be left sweating over Hugo Ekitike’s fitness after the striker was forced off against Brighton with an injury.

The striker lasted just eight minutes on the south coast, after coming off worse from a collision with James Milner.

Ekitike initially tried to carry on, having been taken to the side of the pitch to receive medical attention, but quickly admitted defeat and was replaced by Curtis Jones.

The nature of the injury remained unclear during the game, though replays suggested the striker had suffered a dead leg.

Arne Slot will hope that is the case, given Liverpool have two weeks off until their next game due to the upcoming international break.

Liverpool return to action in early April with a FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City, followed by the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain four days later.

The Reds already have question marks over talisman Mohamed Salah and goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who missed the Amex Stadium clash through injury.

Egypt star Salah and Brazil shot-stopper Alisson have been ruled out of international friendlies for their respective countries, throwing their involvement against City and PSG into doubt.

Long-term absentee Alexander Isak is also a huge doubt, having been ruled out since December with a broken leg, despite Slot confirming that the striker will be in contention to face the French giants.

Any extended lay-off for Ekitije will be a huge blow for the Reds’ trophy hopes this season, with the defence of their Premier League title long since over.
