Liverpool stars pick favourite players growing up but interviewer stunned by Kevin de Bruyne answer

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has named a former Liverpool player as his footballing idol when he was growing up.

The Belgium international was speaking as part of a promotional video for BT Sport alongside many other Premier League players, including Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The video featured the players being asked who was either their favourite player or footballing idol growing up.

When it came to De Bruyne giving his answer, he said that former Liverpool striker Michael Owen was his favourite.

His answer led to the BT Sport staff off camera expressing their surprise at De Bruyne, which led to further questions about his choice.

De Bruyne simply added: “When I was younger, it was Michael Owen”.

The Man City midfielder was further quizzed for his favourite moment, and to which he said Owen’s goal for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

Van Dijk and Mane answered Ronaldinho for their favourite ever player, while Alexander-Arnold said Steven Gerrard was his idol.

Salah listed Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Francesco Totti as his favourites.
