Bristol City continue to play a waiting game in terms of any transfer activity they may or may not conduct over the final week of the window. Quite simply, the Robins destiny in the market is based on more players having to leave the club, before anyone can be added.
The most high-profile of those potential exits is Antoine Semenyo after Bournemouth had two bids rejected for the striker last week but there are a number of other individuals in Nigel Pearson’s squad, most notably those out of contract in the summer, who could be moved on before the January 31 deadline.
City’s unbeaten form since the start of the year has eased anxiety over the need to make reinforcements but they’re yet to fully pull away from the bottom three in the Championship and, as Pearson has maintained, can’t leave themselves short in terms of squad options.
As is consistently the case in January, activity across the division is set to intensify as the week develops and here are the latest rumours involving clubs in the second tier…
Clarets close in on Foster
Burnley’s search for a striker looks set to conclude with the Clarets paying around £7million to sign Lyle Foster from Belgian side Westerlo.
Vincent Kompany has wanted a new forward to aid their promotion drive and an unsuccessful bid was made for Bristol City’s Antoine Semenyo earlier in the window, while Sam Surridge of Nottingham Forest had also been considered.
Multiple reports now state that the South African international, who has eight goals and three assists in 21 league games for Westerlo, will become Burnley’s third arrival of the new year after Kompany watched him in action last week.
Hornets eye defensive reinforcements
Watford and Swansea City are keen on signing emerging Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsay on loan until the end of the season, claim The Sun.
The 19-year-old has made just two appearances this season under Jurgen Klopp, in the Champions League and League Cup, but with a busy fixture schedule on the horizon may be retained as a squad option.
Watford are also in talks with Hibernian over the potential signing of centre-back Ryan Porteous, claim BBC Sport. Blackburn Rovers failed with a £250,000 offer earlier in the window for the 23-year-old.
McCarthy comes Goode
Brentford defender Charlie Goode could become Mick McCarthy’s first signing as Blackpool manager with the Tangerines in “advanced talks” to bring the 27-year-old to Bloomfield Road until the end of the season.
Goode hasn’t made a first-team appearance all season for the Bees and Football Insider report that Blackpool have made a breakthrough in talks to sign the centre-back in their bid to avoid Championship relegation.
McCarthy was appointed last week following the dismissal of Michael Appleton with Blackpool 23rd in the table. He’s yet to oversee a game as their game with Huddersfield Town on the weekend was postponed.
Latics have competition
Wigan Athletic have competition to sign Burton Albion’s Victor Adeboyejo with Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, reporting that Bolton Wanderers have joined the race to sign the forward.
Adeboyejo has scored 11 goals and added two assists this season for the League One strugglers and has an unknown buy-out clause in his contract which Bolton are prepared to meet.
League One promotion chasers Bolton are short on attacking players having sold Dapo Afolayan and loaned Amadou Bakayoko in this window while Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is set to miss the rest of the season due to an ankle injury.
Hull have to wait for Darlow
Hull City hope to have Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as part of their squad before the end of the transfer window but will have to at least wait until after the Magpies Carabao Cup semi-final against Southampton on Tuesday.
Head coach Liam Rosenior wants to sign another goalkeeper to his squad after Nathan Baxter has returned to Chelsea from his loan spell at the MKM Stadium and Darlow, who’s made just one appearance all season, represents a common-sense addition.
However, while Hull Live claim the Tigers are at the front of the queue to sign the 32-year-old on loan, Eddie Howe’s lack of options in that department for their tie against Saints - as Martin Dubravka is cup tied - means they’re having to remain patient.
