Liverpool set to land windfall as striker nears Premier League transfer return

Taiwo Awoniyi is set to complete a club-record move to newly promoted Nottingham Forrest that will see Liverpool bank £1.75million.

After signing for Liverpool in 2015, Awoniyi was loaned out to multiple clubs during his six-year stay at Anfield due to not being able to secure a work permit. His final loan spell saw him join Union Berlin before ultimately moving to the German club on a full-time basis for £6.5m last summer.

And one permanent season with Union, following that initial successful loan stint, has brought the striker close to a £17.5m transfer to Forest, according to a new report.

When the Reds sold Awoniyi to the Berlin club, a 10 per cent sell-on clause was inserted in the deal. So that means once his transfer to Forest is finalised, they will bank £1.75m regardless of how well he does at the Championship play-off winners.

Following 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga games last season, the Nigeria international will be hoping to carry that form with him in the Premier League having not been granted the opportunity while on Merseyside due to circumstances out of his control.

BZ Berlin have reported Awoniyi said goodbye to Union team-mates and left the training ground with a suitcase on Wednesday morning. He is now expected to have a medical at Forest, who are back in the English top-flight after a 23-year absence.
