Liverpool's transfer to-do list after January window closes and late deal collapses

The January transfer window has slammed shut and for Liverpool, it was a good month.

Headlined by the £50million signing of Luis Diaz from Porto, the Reds made a splash in the market and almost got another target over the line on deadline day.

Unfortunately, though, Fulham 's Fabio Carvalho remains a Cottager despite a deal being struck in the final few hours.

But that will not dent Jurgen Klopp and co's confidence, still boasting a superb recruit record - even if sporting director Michael Edwards is packing his bags to leave Anfield in May.

With that in mind, here's Liverpool's transfer to-do list.

Join the debate! Who should Liverpool sign next? Let us know your pick below.

Liverpool almost signed Carvalho on deadline day (PA)

Seal Carvalho deal

Rewind to 10pm on Monday evening and the Reds were on the verge of completing a deadline-day deal for Fulham starlet Carvalho, who has been touted as a long-term target on Merseyside.

With a deal agreed between the two clubs, only a lack of time prevented Klopp from capturing one of English football's hottest properties before the 11pm deadline.

Having already had success by bringing Harvey Elliott from Craven Cottage, Liverpool were keen on the Portuguese-born star who has contributed to six goals in his last four games.

Carvalho was set to stay in west London until the end of the season regardless of whether his transfer went through or not, but the 19-year-old's future remains officially undecided on February 1.

End Salah's contract saga

Something else that the Anfield hierarchy could do with having sorted before the end of the campaign is Mohamed Salah 's contract saga.

With 18 months left on his deal, Salah is yet to commit his long-term future to the Reds amid transfer links to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Although Klopp is calm on the predicament in public, it appears the situation is more stressful behind the scenes, with chiefs refusing to give in to the 29-year-old's demands which he insists are not "crazy."

If Salah's saga rumbles on any longer, Liverpool must be decisive by either coughing up cash which has the potential to break their wage structure or cutting their losses and using the money received to find a replacement.

Ship out deadwood

On the other end of Klopp's agenda is getting rid of the players he deems surplus to requirements.

Although the German will always praise his fringe players to the press and keep spirits high, it has become clear over the last few years that the likes of Divock Origi, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino are simply not at the level of Manchester City 's back-ups.

Despite solid contributions during their respective careers on Merseyside that has endeared them to supporters - particulary Origi thanks to his memorable Champions League and Merseyside Derby goals - the trio can be upgraded and move the Reds up to another level thanks to improved squad depth, something City are superior in.

And although they are far from deadwood yet, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino 's ages mean they could find themselves on the chopping block if the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, see fit.

Start post-Edwards era strong

Speaking of those who work off the pitch, Julian Ward will soon fill sporting director Edward's shoes in an official capacity come June.

Ward, who has been at the club for 10 years and boasts a degree from local University John Moores, played a prominent role in the deal to bring Diaz to Anfield and looks to possess the credentials which make him worthy of take over in the summer.

But like a president's first 100 days in office, he will be truly judged when his maiden transfer window rolls around - which could be Klopp's penultimate due to his contract only running until 2024.
