Liverpool's best and worst case Champions League last-16 draw scenarios facing Jurgen Klopp

On Monday, representatives from Liverpool will travel to Nyon to see who they will face in the Champions League last-16 after the group stage reached its close on Wednesday.

The Reds qualified for the Round of 16 with a game to spare after overcoming Ajax and Rangers twice despite losing heavily on matchday one to Napoli in Naples.

Liverpool got their revenge on the Serie A leaders by ending their 13-match unbeaten run on Tuesday night, but the Reds know all too well how much the level and intensity increases in the Champions League once the knockout stages come around.

There are only four potential opponents Liverpool can draw in the Round of 16 with the Reds finishing second in Group A. Here, we have split the four sides into the two best case scenarios and two worst for Jurgen Klopp 's side.

Best-case scenarios

Porto

Once again, Porto find themselves in the last-16 of the Champions League after topping a group that contained Club Brugge, Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid.

Liverpool will certainly be a side Porto would be wanting to avoid in Monday's draw with the Reds beating the Portuguese side 5-1 and 2-0 in the group stages last season.

Porto topped Group B by one point, with Club Brugge finishing second, as they won four of their six matches - losing twice also. They rounded off their group stage campaign by beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Portugal.

Benfica

Going into Wednesday's matches, Benfica looked certain to finish second behind Paris Saint-Germain in Group H, but they defied the odds and won by five goals to top the group on goals scored.

Benfica came through the group stage unbeaten with four wins and two draws in the six matches they played. The two draws were both 1-1 matches against PSG, so they can certainly hold their own against the best.

Liverpool and Benfica came to blows at the quarter-final stage last season with a certain Darwin Nunez catching the eye of Klopp after he scored in the first leg, with the Reds winning 3-1 and then the 3-3 draw at Anfield.

The Portuguese side would by no means be pushovers and Liverpool certainly know that, but it is a draw that the Reds wouldn't be upset with.

Worst-case scenarios

Real Madrid

Liverpool know the reigning champions very well after losing the final to Madrid in Paris in May in a match that the Reds dominated but couldn't find a way past Thibaut Courtois.

The Reds also played against Madrid in the quarter-finals in 2021 - losing 3-1 on aggregate - after being defeated in the 2018 final in Kyiv. It's safe to say Liverpool's recent history against the Spanish champions is not a good one.

It may well be that Klopp would rather avoid another clash with Carlo Ancelotti's side if it can be helped. With Fede Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni on top of their game in midfield, they could be too much for the current Liverpool midfield to handle.

Madrid came through Group F with four wins, one draw and a loss, but everyone knows they come alive in the knockout rounds in the Champions League.

Bayern Munich

It seems like fate that Liverpool will be drawn against the German champions in what will see a reunion with Reds legend Sadio Mane sooner than the fans would have wanted.

Bayern became the first side in the history of the Champions League to win all six of their group matches for three consecutive seasons and they are still a force to be reckoned with, even without the goalscoring prowess of Robert Lewandowski.

To come through a group that contained Inter Milan and Barcelona with 18 points and a goal difference of 16 just shows where this Bayern side is at and they are certainly a team that Liverpool would like to avoid given the choice.

The last meeting took place at this stage in 2019 as Liverpool progressed 3-1 on aggregate. A goalless draw at Anfield then saw Klopp's side go to the Allianz Arena and power their way past Bayern before lifting their sixth Champions League that season.
