Liverpool's £13m incentive to help Arsenal in Premier League title race - but there's a problem

Arsenal require at least 25 points from a possible 30 to be crowned Premier League champions for the first time in almost two decades.

That works out to be, in a dream scenario, eight wins and a draw from their final 10 games which would see them finish on 94 points - a total that Manchester City can also reach should they claim victory in their remaining 11 fixtures and then it could come down to goal difference which is currently in favour of the defending champions by two.

However, the Gunners won't need to win as many as eight games if City begin to drop points and looking at Saturday's early kick-off in the Premier League there's every chance it could happen as Liverpool are the visitors to the Etihad Stadium in a clash between two clubs who have dominated the title race in recent years.

Now whilst the Reds aren't challenging for English football's biggest prize this season, they are poised to have a major say as to where the trophy ends up. Firstly, Jurgen Klopp has outlined the importance of the Reds securing a victory against City that will boost their chances of a top-four finish and potentially help Arsenal in the title race.

"Yeah, super-important game, that’s the one thing that’s not different to all the other years because obviously for us super-important, for City super-important," the German said in his pre-match press conference. "So, apart from that, I’m not sure in the moment, I don’t think you could now say it’s nicer to fight for the title or whatever, in the moment it’s just about [that] we have to win football games. And you get usually what you deserve if you work hard enough – and that’s what we try.

"But we know it’s a massive game, a massive week coming up. But for tomorrow obviously they deserve all the attention, we should not think about the other games. That’s how we approach it. The boys are now back; some of them trained today the first time, that’s how it is with international duties but it’s no different to City’s situation, for them it’s the same."

As things stand, Liverpool are six points off the final Champions League qualification spot but, perhaps more importantly, they've played two fewer games than Tottenham Hotspur and host the north London outfit later in the month.

Having crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid last month, Klopp will be well aware that his side must claim a top four finish to be back in the competition next season and the reward for doing so is a £13.4million in prize money if this season is anything to go by.

Even if Liverpool do manage to take points off Man City, it will be seen as an opportunity missed if the Gunners don't take care of business on their end against a Leeds United side that are in desperate need of the points in their bid to avoid being relegated from the Premier League.

Furthermore, there is another problem that won't fill Arsenal fans with too much confidence beyond this weekend. In games against the Premier League's current top-six this season, the Merseyside outfit boast the best head-to-head record with five wins and two defeats from seven.

So if Liverpool avoid defeat at the Etihad to keep their top-four pursuit on track they can cause another twist in the title race eight days later when the Gunners visit Anfield - a stadium that hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Mikel Arteta nor was it for former head coach Unai Emery.
