Liverpool have released a statement after a group of Manchester United fans were heard mocking the Hillsborough disaster at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Footage emerged of a group of fans singing about The Sun newspaper as they walked towards Anfield ahead of United’s 4-0 defeat on Merseyside. The publication has been widely boycotted in the city after falsely reporting that Liverpool fans were to blame for the 1989 tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of 97 supporters.
Members of the group at the front and back of the crowd can be heard singing the song. Some visiting supporters were also heard chanting the same message towards the home fans during Tuesday night’s game.

Manchester United released the following statement on Wednesday: " Manchester United stands in solidarity with Liverpool FC and its fans in remembering the victims of the Hillsborough disaster. Offensive chants about the tragedy are completely unacceptable and we will work with our supporters’ groups to educate fans on the issue."
Liverpool have now also issued a statement about the chants. A club spokesperson said: "Liverpool FC is saddened by the recent rise in vile chants about the Hillsborough disaster. We know the impact these abhorrent slurs have on the families of the 97, those who survived, and all associated with this club.
"We are working with the relevant authorities to do our utmost to ensure these chants are eradicated from football altogether and, where appropriate, bring the full force of the law and the game’s sanction process down on those who continue to sing them." The incident on Tuesday came just days after a group of Manchester City supporters interrupted a minute's silence for the Hillsborough victims at Wembley before their FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
