Liverpool pub given poor rating by health inspectors

A Liverpool pub was given a critical rating by hygiene inspectors.

The Lister Hotel on Prescot Road was handed a zero out of five rating by the Food Standards Agency after a visit by Liverpool Council inspectors earlier this year. The inspection deemed that major improvements are needed at the Fairfield venue in how it deals with food.

Publicly available information has detailed that during an inspection on April 26, officers from the local authority identified that the Lister’s hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was found wanting. The cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene was also lacking according to the information made available by the Food Standards Agency.

The Lister was granted a new premises licence in 2014 and was permitted by Liverpool Council to open from 10am to 12.30am Monday to Sunday, with the sale of alcohol on the premises allowed until midnight Monday to Saturdays and 10.30pm on Sundays. However, major improvement was said to be needed in terms of the pub’s system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

It is understood by the ECHO that food was provided on weekends at the Lister to help those less fortunate in the community. On social media, the Lister Hotel describes itself as “a warm and friendly public house located in Fairfield, Liverpool UK.

“Upon entering this beautifully crafted building you will be greeted with friendly service and great quality, affordable drinks. The Lister Hotel is a diverse establishment offering a quiet snug room for those who want to relax in a warm, comfortable environment, a large front and back bar area with plenty of seating, and an outdoor smoking area.”

Should the proprietors of the Lister wish to contest the rating, they can do so by way of requesting a re-inspection. A spokesperson for the Lister Hotel said the pub regularly used pest control measures and was working with Liverpool Council to arrange another inspection as well as resolving the matters that arose.
