Liverpool have reportedly presented Virgil van Dijk a new deal in their attempts to keep their captain at Anfield.
The Dutchman, 33, is one of three leading Liverpool stars who are out of contract next summer.
Fans are concerned that they could lose Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold next summer.
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in January 2018, has been one of the best defenders in world football since he joined Anfield.
His performances this season have led to him receiving a nomination for the FIFPRO Men’s World11.
Reports have indicated that Van Dijk is the first of the contract trio to receive the offer of a new deal.
Van Dijk Contract Offer ‘Short Of His Expectations’
The Athletic report that while Virgil Van Dijk has been offered a new deal, there is still work to be done to persuade him to extend his stay at Anfield.
Liverpool’s opening offer of a new deal fell short of Van Dijk’s expectations.
Arne Slot’s side need to reach a breakthrough on the value and length of the extension.
Liverpool have been reluctant when it comes to new contract offers for their star players approaching or already in their 30s.

The offer of a new deal shows the importance of Van Dijk to Liverpool – despite him turning 34 next July.
Van Dijk is one of three players – alongside Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch – to start every game for the Reds this season.
Updates on Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold
The report on Van Dijk’s new deal also claims that an offer of an extension is expected for Mohamed Salah.
Salah has been vocal about his contract situation at Liverpool, insisting he has not received the offer of a new deal and that he is ‘more out than in’.
The Egyptian, who turns 33 next summer, is in incredible form however, with 24 goal contributions in 20 games.
There is also ongoing dialogue between the Reds and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The homegrown Liverpool star has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid after his contract expires next summer.
Liverpool fans will hope to soon hear progress on new deals for Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold.
For now, they turn their attention to Newcastle on Wednesday night.
