Liverpool news: Reds star could leave for free as Alexis Mac Allister deal progresses

Liverpool face their most important summer of transfer business in recent years as Jurgen Klopp eyes a midfield overhaul.

The departures of James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have left the Reds light on options in the engine room at Anfield. However, the exits mean that Liverpool now have the chance to embark on a transformation of their playing staff and they could confirm the first summer arrival in the coming days.

Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister is the main name in the frame to join the club, with other targets such as Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount looking likely to move elsewhere amid the Reds' failure to qualify for the Champions League. However, there could also be preparations for further departures, with Thiago's future unclear as he enters the final year of his contract.

Here is the latest news from around Anfield.

Mac Allister close to Liverpool transfer

Liverpool are moving closer to a full agreement to sign Alexis Mac Allister, with a deal potentially being confirmed this week.

The Reds have agreed in principle the outlines of a fee with Brighton for the World Cup winner, which would cover the clause allowing him to leave in his contract and has been reported to be below £60m.

Thiago could leave for free

Liverpool are unlikely to offer Thiago Alcantara a new deal which would leave him free to depart in 12 months.

Injury issues have affected Thiago's time at Anfield, which has limited his game time. He was part of the squad which was close to winning a quadruple in 2021/22, with an FA Cup and Carabao Cup to show for his time at Anfield.

Liverpool are in the midst of overhauling their midfield in a bid to revitalise their squad and Goal reports that the Spaniard is likely to be allowed to run his current contract down, but is not expected to be sold this summer.

Souness leads Galatasaray celebrations

Graeme Souness celebrates Galatasaray's title triumph (Galatasaray)

Former Liverpool icon Graeme Souness was invited out on to the Galatasaray pitch ahead of their clash with Fenerbahce as he recreated the memorable flag celebration from his 1996 Turkish Cup win as their manager.

The Scot was present at Galatasaray's routine 3-0 victory against their fierce rivals as a brace from Nicolo Zaniolo and a Mauro Icardi's strike got the party started for the Super Lig champions, who were presented with the trophy after the game.

Souness relived his iconic celebration that nearly sparked a riot back in '96, when he placed a flag bearing Galatasaray's colours in the centre of Fenerbahce's pitch. Fortunately this time he was on home territory, much to the delight of the Galatasaray fans.
