Liverpool news: Reds hit by sickness bug as Jamie Carragher makes Man City prediction

Liverpool face a huge week in their quest to make the Premier League top four - starting with a trip to Manchester City in Saturday's early kick-off (12:30pm).

The Reds have suffered a drop-off this term and are fighting for fourth rather than for the title. Jurgen Klopp's side return from the international break sixth in the table, seven points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand.

After taking on City, they will head to Chelsea on Tuesday and host Arsenal next Sunday in a huge run of games to define their season. Luis Diaz returned to training in a welcome boost this week, although Klopp confirmed he won't be ready to face City.

Here's a run-down of all the latest Liverpool headlines ahead of their game against Manchester City.

Klopp reveals sickness bug

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool's players have been suffering with illness ahead of their Premier League trip to Manchester City.

Speaking at Friday afternoon's press conference, Klopp was divulging the fitness status of several of his squad when he said that players had suffered with "stomach bugs" during the international break, but thankfully they had cleared up ahead of the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Discussing midfielders Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara, he said: "Naby is out. He came back with a muscle injury from the national team. We will see how long it takes.

"Thiago is in a good way, but is not part of team training yet. He will probably be part of next week's training. Rhys Williams has a little bit of something. We had stomach bugs here and there, but that stopped two days ago."

Carragher makes "greatest challenge" prediction

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool will provide Manchester City and Arsenal with their "greatest challenge" in the Premier League title race.

Writing for The Telegraph, Carragher said: "For all Liverpool’s difficulties this season, aside from when City and Arsenal play each other, they are the greatest challenge remaining in the league.

"It was City who ended Liverpool’s quadruple bid a year ago. Jürgen Klopp will be desperate to put a dent in Guardiola’s Treble bid this time.

"This will not be how Klopp wanted or planned it, but the logic over the next two weeks is not dissimilar as in previous years for those wanting to celebrate in May. Whichever side beats Liverpool will feel like they are a step closer to winning the league. If City succeed and Arsenal do not, the Treble talk will get louder."

Alexander-Arnold pinpoints key fixtures

Trent Alexander-Arnold believes Liverpool 's upcoming games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal could go some way to defining their season.

Alexander-Arnold told the club's website : "I think [if] we get three big results and it's game on really, and hopefully the season pushes on to be a good one. These three results can define the season if we let it and if we want it to. We want to go out there and win all three games – and that's our plan.

"I think as a team we've probably lacked that confidence at times during the season. But to go and get big results against big teams will instil that confidence back within us. We're excited as a team, we're looking fresh, good in training and we're excited. It's going to be a big week and then hopefully a big end to the season for us."
