Liverpool news: Klopp denied Man Utd dream transfer as theory emerges on "too loyal" stance

Liverpool 's struggling season shows no signs of improving after their bore draw with Chelsea.

After that 0-0 stalemate at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Jurgen Klopp hinted he would quit the club if they endured similar frustrations next season. The Reds have underwhelmed all season and are currently eighth in the Premier League - a staggering 29 points behind table-toppers Arsenal.

They have the chance to bounce back when they host the Gunners in a mouthwatering Premier League showdown on Sunday. Klopp will ramp up his preparations on Thursday - and here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest headlines...

Klopp blocked Man Utd transfer after half-time phone call from Ferguson

Jurgen Klopp scuppered Manchester United's sensational move for Polish hitman Robert Lewandowski despite a personal phone call from legendary Red Devils’ boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich striker has developed the reputation as one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe over the last decade. A ten-time Bundesliga champion, he could well have been finding the back of the net at Old Trafford.

As revealed by the now 34-year-old in an interview with SportBild, iconic Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson made a mid-match phone call in an effort to tempt Lewandowski to the club. He said: “I remember the moment exactly..."

Ince disagrees with Richards after criticism over Klopp decision

Paul Ince has dismissed theories that Jurgen Klopp has been "too loyal" to certain Liverpool players and believes the German will turn their fortunes around following a drab 0-0 draw against Chelsea.

The Reds currently sit seven points behind fourth-place Tottenham in the race for a Champions League place. They have a game in hand on Spurs, but Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester United are also well in the running to finish inside the top-four this season.

Micah Richards claimed that Klopp may need to be a bit more brutal as he gets set for a huge change of events at the club in the summer. He wrote in the Daily Mail: "Klopp has been too loyal to some of the men who have been with him throughout and a little too slow in refreshing."

However, former Liverpool midfielder Ince doesn't think that has been the case. Speaking to the Sporting Post, he said: "I'm not so sure. Klopp’s been absolutely amazing for Liverpool. It's tough when you think about what he's brought to the city, what he's brought to the fans, to the people of Liverpool. It's been an unbelievable journey.

Chelsea explain Mount absence amid Liverpool interest

Chelsea interim head coach Bruno Saltor insists he won't hesitate to use Mason Mount despite speculation over his future.

The 24-year-old was an unused substitute during their 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Tuesday night and has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge this summer after contract negotiations were put on hold. Mount has just over a year left on his current deal.

Mount hasn't featured since Chelsea's 2-0 defeat against Tottenham back in February due to a foot injury. When asked about his absence, Bruno said: "He was available, but he's coming back from an injury. It's always challenging bringing players back from injury. He can play in different positions. He's a great player. We love him."
