Liverpool 'monitoring' midfielder wanted by Arsenal and Newcastle

Liverpool are reportedly set to battle with Arsenal for a potential new signing.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and rumours are continuing to surface over possible new arrivals that could occur in the New Year. The Reds have been linked with a host of potential players that could make the move to Anfield when the window reopens.

One topic that has been the subject of debate is whether or not Liverpool will sign a midfielder. It was the area of the squad that some felt was in greatest need of strengthening during the summer, with loan signing Arthur Melo the only new arrival in that department.

As a result, further midfielders have been linked with a January move to Liverpool. The latest rumour involves Lens star Seko Fofana.

According to French news outlet L’Equipe, via Sport Witness, Arsenal and Newcastle are expressing an interest in signing Fofana. The 27-year-old is a versatile midfielder, who can play either in the centre or a more defensive role in the middle of the park.

The report goes on to say that, despite these rumours, Fofana would ideally prefer to stay in France if he was to leave his current club. This is when Liverpool enter the frame.

A separate report from French journalist Ignazio Genuardi has claimed that Liverpool are monitoring the progress of Fofana. It has been reported that the Reds have shortlisted the midfielder as a potential target, but does not specify whether this is for January or next summer.
