Liverpool might have no choice but to make midfield sacrifice in order to strengthen

I don’t know about Liverpool’s reported interest Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong, but I do know that we are flaky in midfield. The fact that we’ve got two players who are injury prone, as well.

Naby Keita, in particular. Curtis Jones hasn’t had great luck with injuries lately, Thiago Alcantara and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been out quite a lot.

So that leaves you down to four midfielders basically, maybe five if you count Fabio Carvalho, which is not ideal. Keita could continue to be injured this season, and Oxlade-Chamberlain is out for a long time and can never seem to get back on track.

I personally think that if there is someone out there who is as good as what we’ve got, or better, then get them in. If not then don’t sign them just for the sake of it.

You can’t put all of the work on Harvey Elliott or Carvalho, the manager knows that. With Carvalho, he can play up front which is a better position for him, or on the wing.

Elliott won’t be struggling for game time either. He’s one for the present, and more so for the future.

So I think Liverpool are light in midfield. I think they need to get a midfielder who can give them the hard work, the closing down and an all-rounder.

But it’s much easier said than done in this day and age, if they get it over the line before deadline day on Thursday.

If Liverpool get a new midfielder this summer, by the time January comes around, Thiago will be fit, and possibly one of the others. So they will be alright until the end of the season.

But for the moment Liverpool are light in midfield. If anything were to happen to Jordan Henderson or Fabinho then they have got big trouble.

James Milner is a great professional, but surely at his age he can’t play week in week out. Klopp will know that. So as an insurance policy, if there’s someone out there who’s good enough to join Liverpool then they should go and get them.

I haven’t got a clue who they could get, but that’s what Liverpool do brilliantly. They keep it in house and nobody actually knows until it’s over the line, and that’s the way it should be.

It’s only in midfield where Liverpool need new signings. Darwin Nunez will be back for the Merseyside derby against Everton at the weekend, so he’ll have a point to prove.

Liverpool will have more options on the bench, and hopefully they’ll be in a much better position by the time the Everton game comes around.

What next for Naby Keita?

Naby Keita isn’t going to be going anywhere this summer, by the looks of it. He’s going to run his contract down and the club will lose money on him, unfortunately.

In an ideal world, for me personally, I’d like to sell him tomorrow and get some money in. He could run his contract down and walk away on a free transfer.

But you can’t depend on him, because whenever he gets a run in the team he only lasts four or five games. It’s always been the same and it’s not right.

So that’s what every Liverpool fan would ideally like. Get some money back and go and get someone who’s not injured and who’s as good or better, and at the minute there’s plenty out there that will, in my opinion.
