Liverpool are set to begin 'formal negotiations' with Sporting CP over the transfer of Matheus Nunes, according to a report in Portugal. The midfielder is said to be a priority for Jurgen Klopp in the summer window.
The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea have also reportedly been watching the 23-year-old. But according to Correio da Manha, Liverpool are keen to make a move ahead of their Premier League rivals. Sporting are reportedly looking for a fee in the region of £45m for Nunes.
Liverpool were interested in signing Aurelien Tchouameni earlier in the window. However, the France international opted to join Real Madrid from Monaco in a deal worth around £85m.
But with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara now in their 30s and Naby Keita being in the final year of his contract, sooner rather than later the Reds will be in the market for a new midfielder.
Portugal international Nunes certainly fits the bill in terms of his profile for Liverpool. However, the word from England is that the club has competed its transfer business this summer - and that any move for a midfielder is on hold until next summer. That's when Jude Bellingham, the Borussia Dortmund rising star, could become available.
