Liverpool made to wait before discovering FA Cup quarter-final opponents

Liverpool have been made to wait before discovering their FA Cup quarter-final opponents as they look to continue their quadruple quest.

The Reds will play at either Nottingham Forest or Huddersfield Town after the draw for the last eight took place on Thursday evening.

The Championship duo face off in the fifth round at Forest's City Ground on Monday night.

Huddersfield currently stand third in the second tier and are challenging for automatic promotion to the Premier League while Forest, who have already eliminated the last two winners of the FA Cup in Arsenal and Leicester City, are in the hunt for a play-off berth.

Liverpool haven't played Forest in the FA Cup since winning 3-1 in the 1989 semi-final, the original tie of which was abandoned due to the Hillsborough disaster in which 97 Reds supporters died.

The Anfield side last faced Huddersfield in the competition in 1999/2000 when they won 2-0 away in the third round.

The quarter-final tie will take place on the weekend of March 19-21.

Liverpool progressed to the last eight for the first time under Jurgen Klopp by beating Premier League strugglers Norwich City 2-1 at Anfield on Wednesday. They had earlier beaten both Shrewsbury Town and Cardiff City at home in the competition.

The Reds' forthcoming tie means the Premier League visit of Manchester United, scheduled for March 20, will be rearranged to a later date.

Liverpool have a remarkable record in FA Cup quarter-finals since the shock 1-0 defeat at Watford back in 1970 that prompted the end of several Reds careers under Bill Shankly.

In 22 subsequent last eight ties, Liverpool have won 16, drawn five - which were then all won in the replay - and lost only once, a 2-1 home reverse to Tottenham Hotspur in 1995.
