Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard reveals message from Prince William

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has revealed Prince William sent his squad a message of support before taking on Southampton at Villa Park on Friday night.

Gerrard has come under pressure in recent weeks due to poor performances from Villa, but they managed to secure all three points thanks to a Jacob Ramsey goal against the Saints.

Prince William, an avid Aston Villa supporter, couldn't be at Villa Park due to the death of his grandmother, the Queen, but he still took the time to send a supporting message to the Villa boss.

Villa and Southampton paid tribute to the Queen before kick-off on Friday night with a minute's silence, the national anthem being played and then an applause during the 70th minute of the game.

After the win, Gerrard said: “He messaged in the week, to the club, and that shows everything about what he thinks of this club. For us to reward that with a result and clean sheet, I’m sure he will be proud.

“It was along the lines of ‘would love to be there’.”
