The landlady of one of Liverpool’s most famous pubs says she is “proud” to run one of the so-called 'famous five' pubs in the UK.
Carol Ross, landlady and owner of the much-loved Roscoe Head in Liverpool city centre, said she is "proud" after the pub was named in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide (GBG) for the 50th year in a row this year - one of only five pubs in the UK to share this honour. Carol took ownership of the pub in November 2020 after a long battle with the pub’s previous owners .
Carol, whose family has run the pub for the last 40 years, said she was “truly elated” with the honour, despite sometimes believing “this battle was never ending”. The pub has faced a number of challenges over the last few years, including several lockdowns during the pandemic and the restrictions that followed.

Carol said: “Year on year - 30 years, 40 years - I realised I had been pretty blasé about it to say the least, being in the GPG all those years, but 50 years, wow - it is a big achievement not just for me but the licensees before me, Jack and Joyce Smith, Nicky and Margaret Joyce (my parents) and myself.
“To be one of the famous five, I feel very honoured indeed, looking at the other four beautiful pubs around the country. I feel very proud to be amongst them.”
Now, more than two years after taking over the pub, Carol is looking forward to retiring next year and says she is “looking forward to having a well earned rest”. However, she wants to “make sure the Roscoe Head is still in safe hands continuing as a pub and being in the 60th Edition of the Good Beer Guide” before she does.
