Liverpool involved in major VAR review as Howard Webb set to unveil private discussions on MNF

A special Monday Night Football will take place next ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash against Leicester City tonight.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb revealed new plans last month for referees to explain their decisions to fans during and after games, in a bid to 'draw the curtains back' for supporters in the stadium and at home.

Webb, who took over as chief refereeing officer at PGMOL back in August 2022, has had to deal with a lot of issues in his first year at the organisation. However, for the first time tonight, the former Premier League referee will appear on a special Monday Night Football show at 6.30pm to explain some key decisions from the 2022/23 season.

What will Howard Webb be doing with VAR?

The former referee will talk through some footage of a number of high-profile calls throughout the season, with the conversations between referees and VAR officials heard. This means there may be clarity over the decisions surrounding the Reds, including incidents involving Diogo Jota or Oliver Skipp during the thriller at Anfield last month. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was involved in a late lunge on Luis Diaz connecting with the Colombian's ankle but escaped punishment.

Who else will be on the show?

Webb will be joining pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville from 6:30pm, an hour-and-a-half before kick-off at the King Power Stadium. Dave Jones will present the show as normal.

What else is happening?

Another 26 minute show entitled - Match Officials: Mic’d Up - featuring former Liverpool forward Michael Owen and Webb will also be shown to overseas viewers as part of the Premier League Productions package for foreign rights holders.
