Liverpool injury update: Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak and Conor Bradley latest news and return dates

Sidelined: Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak and Conor Bradley - (London Standard)

Liverpool saw their hopes of finishing in the Premier League top five dented as they were beaten in stoppage time by Manchester City on Sunday.

The 2-1 defeat sees the Reds lose further ground in the race for the Champions League places.

There were no further injury worries for Arne Slot in the Anfield loss, although goalscorer Dominik Szoboszlai - who was controversially sent off at the death - was seen hobbling before half time.

The Hungarian recovered to smash home the opener from a free-kick, before he saw a late red card for denying Erling Haaland a clear goalscoring opportunity.

His absence in the next game will be a sore miss for Slot, who is now without his makeshift right-back solution after his two first-choice options were already sidelined with injury.

Here is all the latest Liverpool injury news and return dates ahead of facing Sunderland this week...

Jeremie Frimpong

The summer signing has struggled with injuries since his arrival at Anfield.

He was withdrawn in the early exchanges of the 6-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League with a muscle injury.

Slot revealed ahead of the Man City game that his compatriot would “definitely not train” with his team-mates, and would not be available for City’s visit to Merseyside.

Post-match at Anfield on Sunday, Slot said of the former Bayer Leverkusen man: "Jeremie for sure [will not play against Sunderland]. We knew that when he got injured, it was a few weeks.”

Before Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Newcastle, Slot issued a more positive update on the right-back, admitting that while he did not know when exactly Frimpong would return, his issue was not as bad as first feared.

“He is out for a few weeks,” the Liverpool boss said.

“But [it's] not as bad as we thought he would be out. It's something positive from something not so positive.”

Joe Gomez

Gomez’s hip injury at Bournemouth plunged Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis to further depths.

It left Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the only two fit senior centre-backs available to Slot.

Should either of them pick up a knock or a suspension, then the Premier League champions would be struggling to replace them.

Gomez was thought to be nearing a return ahead of the Man City game, with Slot revealing pre-match that he could potentially feature, but the Englishman was not in the matchday squad.

Post-match, Slot revealed that Gomez would be unlikely to play against Sunderland in midweek either.

“I don’t expect Joe back for Wednesday, but you never know.,” he said.

“Then he is back from being out for three weeks, would you play him now?”

Potential return date: vs Brighton on February 14 (H)

Conor Bradley

Northern Irish international Bradley was taken off injured in January’s goalless draw at Arsenal.

He will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, although he avoided a full-on ACL rupture.

He required surgery to repair damaged ligaments, and as such, he will not feature at all for the remainder of the campaign.

A Liverpool statement on the right-back read: “Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury.

“The right-back suffered the issue in the latter stages of Thursday night's Premier League fixture away at Arsenal.

“Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days and then begin a period of rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre.

“No timeframe is being placed on his return to playing at this stage of the process.”

Potential return date: Summer 2026

Alexander Isak

Isak broke his leg after scoring the first goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham before Christmas.

The Swedish international has not played since that game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, having suffered the injury in a rough challenge by Micky van de Ven.

Slot dubbed the challenge “reckless”, and he was dealt a major injury blow with Isak fracturing his fibula, having surgery on his ankle and leg.

“It's going to be a long injury, for a couple of months,” said Slot, who expects Isak to play again this season. “It's a big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us.”

Potential return date: March 2026

Giovanni Leoni

Another summer signing Leoni will not, however, play for his new side again this term after he tore his ACL on his debut against Southampton in the Carabao Cup back in September.

The Italian defender is out for around a year.

“He is not in a good place, of course, because he tore his ACL and it means he will be out for around a year,” Slot said of the young centre-back.

“Being so young, coming to a new country and playing so well in your first game, it’s very hard to take the positive side.

“There’s never a positive side but he is still so young so he has many years to go after he recovers from a terrible injury like that.”

Potential return date: September 2026
