Liverpool handed Ruben Neves transfer update as wage bill set for major increase

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, January 23.

Wolves 'tell Liverpool' transfer stance on Ruben Neves

Liverpool have reportedly been dealt a blow in their apparent pursuit of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

The Reds continue to be linked with a host of potential new midfielders as the January transfer window rolls on. Cody Gakpo remains the club’s only new signing so far this month.

Results in the Premier League have been inconsistent, which has left Liverpool in ninth place in the table. This form has led to increased calls from sections of supporters and pundits to bring in reinforcements.

One player to be linked with a move to Anfield is Neves. The Wolves midfielder has previously been credited as a possible target for Liverpool in certain reports.

However, according to a fresh report from Football Insider, the chances of a deal happening this month are slim. The article states that Wolves have told Liverpool they will not sanction an exit for Neves in January.

Liverpool wage bill set to surge after £368m reveal

Liverpool's wage bill is set to surge by £54m when the 2021/22 financial accounts are published after the club engaged a number of key players on new contracts.

The Reds are yet to publish their full accounts, likely doing so in a few weeks time, but the annual Deloitte Money League Report, which details the financial performance of the top 20 revenue-generating clubs in European football, revealed that the club's wage bill had soared from £314m in 2020/21 to around £368m in 2021/22.

While the increased wage bill in 2020 and 2021 can be attributed to winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, where bonus payments were paid to players and staff, the 2022 rise has been driven by new contract renewals, including the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk, as well as the wage outlay on new arrivals considerably outstripping those departing the club.

While the club narrowly missed out on both the Premier League title and the Champions League, defeated in the final by Real Madrid during the last financial period, the Reds won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. In running so close to a quadruple there are likely to be some element of bonus payments included in the rise.

The wage rise comes at a time when the club are to post record revenues of £594.3m, the third highest on the Money League table for 2022, with the wage bill accounting for around 62 per cent of revenues, a figure that flies comfortably under UEFA's recommended ceiling of 70 per cent wages to turnover ratio. The Liverpool wage bill accounts for all staff, not just the playing squad.
