Liverpool handed Luis Diaz transfer boost after Tottenham's January move shot down

Porto have rejected an offer from Tottenham for highly-rated winger Luis Diaz.

Liverpool fans will be delighted with the news, as manager Jurgen Klopp is said to be a huge fan of the Colombian, 25.

Diaz has done well since moving to Europe in the summer of 2019, scoring 41 goals in 125 appearances in all competitions for Porto.

The 31-cap international's form this season has been particularly impressive, finding the back of the net 14 times in the league.

Diaz was also superb at the Copa America last summer, inspiring Colombia to the semi-finals and finishing as the tournament's joint top scorer alongside Lionel Messi.

Diaz's form has helped Porto go six points clear at the top of the Portuguese league and attracted attention from some of Europe's biggest clubs.

Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton are all thought to be monitoring his progress, while Mirror Football understands believed Tottenham have made a transfer bid.

The Portuguese giants are thought to have rejected Tottenham's advances and will not sell him unless a potential suitor matches his release clause.

Diaz can open negotiations with his next club if they table an offer of €80m - around £67m. He has two-and-a-half years remaining on his existing deal.

Porto manager Sergio Conceicao views the player as crucial to his aspirations of winning the league title, Portuguese Cup and Europa League this season.

Tottenham's failed bid is good news for Liverpool boss Klopp, who is reportedly considering making a move for Diaz in the near future.

The Reds are unlikely to make a bid in January but could do so in the summer, especially if they fail to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract.

The Egyptian, 29, has just 18 months left on his existing deal and Liverpool may reluctantly sell him if he doesn't agree an extension.

Former Colombia coach Arturo Reyes has compared Diaz to Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho.

“A player like Lucho, with the qualities he has, can play for any team," said Reyes. "It’s not easy to find players like him.

"There are things similar to Sancho. Both have fun on the field, they don’t feel pressure and they play the same way in any side."
