Liverpool great Steven Gerrard breaks silence on Saudi Arabia management reports

Steven Gerrard has confirmed he will not be returning to management with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq.

As reported, the former Liverpool hero had been heavily linked with following Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and other star names into the Pro League after being spotted visiting the Middle Eastern country. However, while discussions were held, the 43-year-old has opted to side-step that opportunity for now.

After a season-long spell as Liverpool's under-18s boss, Gerrard started his managerial career north of the border with Rangers and guided the Glasgow outfit to their first Scottish Premiership crown in over a decade. His follow-up spell at Aston Villa did not go according to plan, though.

Gerrard was sacked from his position in the Villa Park dugout midway through last season and has been working - among other things - as a pundit as he waits for another manager's opportunity. Sitting in the Channel 4 studio on Monday night, he addressed mounting speculation over his new job offer.

Joining fellow ex-internationals, Joe Cole and Jill Scott, on the panel before England's Euro 2024 qualifier vs North Macedonia, he said: "A lot has been said in the media and a lot of it is not true.

"I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did, and have been analysing that over the last couple of days. As we stand, right now, I won't be taking that offer up."

Having progressed through the Liverpool ranks, Gerrard played 710 games for his beloved Reds in all competitions, scoring 186 goals and providing 154 assists in the process. He captained the club for over a decade and, also, picked up seven major honours including the Champions League trophy in 2005.

As per reports, Gerrard was backed to replace Khaled Al-Atwi at the Al-Ettifaq helm, after they finished seventh in the Saudi Pro League last season out of 16 teams.
