Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has poked fun at the precarious situation Boris Johnson currently finds himself in, taking inspiration from a infamous Kevin Keegan speech as part of his joke.
The Prime Minister's position is in serious doubt after 50 members of the government resigned from their roles, with Sajid Javid and Rishi Sunak the first to jump ship after losing faith in Johnson. Both of these positions have since been filled but high-profile departures are continuing to mount.
Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove was sacked last night by the PM, after calling on Johnson to resign, but other Tory MPs have stayed true to Johnson despite his bleak situation. The PM survived a vote of no confidence last month and is therefore protected for a year, though reports on Wednesday evening have claimed a second vote could be held 'within days' as the 1922 Committee, which represents backbench Conservative MPs, consider a rule change to make this possible.
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, who is originally from Liverpool, is among the MPs to have pledged her support for Johnson and tweeted the following message on Tuesday: "I’m not sure anyone actually doubted this, however, I am 100 per cent behind @BorisJohnson - the PM who consistently gets all the big decisions right."
Making light of Dorries' stance, Carragher responded with his own social media post of Dorries' face along with the following words: "They’ve still got to go to the 1922 committee & get something, and honestly, I will love it if we beat them!"
The reference in question here, of course, relates to Liverpool great Keegan's rant while in charge of Newcastle United when biting back at comments made by ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the two sides battled it out for glory during the 1995/96 season.
