Liverpool goalkeeper undergoes 'physical' training as Xabi Alonso eyes up defender

While Liverpool only returned to the AXA Training Centre on Saturday morning to start their preparations for the new season, some of the club's youngsters have been making serious progress with their summer schedules away from the club.

Harvey Davies, Owen Beck and Rhys Williams have all made temporary switches away from Liverpool for the 2023/24 campaign with the former joining League Two side Crewe Alexandra while the latter two have made season-long moves to clubs in the Scottish Premiership.

Davies has earned himself a reputation as one of the club's brightest academy prospects in recent years and sealed a move to the League Two outfit in June. The 19-year-old goalkeeper's early weeks at the Mornflake Stadium have seen him carry out rigorous double sessions with Lee Bell's squad.

Despite interest from elsewhere in the Football League, Davies settled on a move to Crewe after being impressed by the way in which Arsenal's young keeper Arthur Okonkwo developed during his stint at the club last season.

Davies, like Okonkwo, has been working under Alex goalkeeping coach Fred Barber in his early weeks at the club. And Barber has taken a physical approach to his training to get the Liverpool rising star ready for his debut in England's fourth tier, which could come against Mansfield Town on August 5. Davies said: "He works a bit different, and focuses on the physical side of training, but it's really helpful."

On Saturday, Davies completed his first 45 minutes for Crewe as they ran out 5-0 winners against non-league side Halesowen Town. Manager Bell fielded two teams for the fixture, with Davies one of four new signings to debut.

Davies and his new side are next in action on Tuesday night when they make the visit to the KMJ Stadium to face Whitchurch Alport.

Meanwhile, Beck has been adapting to life north of the border with Dundee after enduring two disappointing loan spells last season. Initially signing with Portuguese outfit Famalicao, that was swiftly cut short before the left-back joined Bolton Wanderers in late August.

But after only making a handful of appearances under manager Ian Evatt, Beck returned to Anfield in January and played the second half of the campaign with Liverpool's under-21s.

However, this time around, Beck has made a bright start to life away from Merseyside and even found the back of the net during Dundee's 5-1 victory over Bray Wanderers last Wednesday.

Speaking of his delight at sealing a deal for Beck, who made his debut for the Reds during the 2021/22 season, manager Tony Docherty said: “I am thrilled we’ve managed to land Owen for the season and I think it’s fantastic for the club to be able to get somebody of his standard.

“There was a lot of interest from other clubs and he could have joined some good English teams, but the fact that he chose us shows where the club is at the moment."

On Saturday, Beck completed 70 minutes during a 2-1 victory over League One outfit Fleetwood Town.

Back on Merseyside, defender Calvin Ramsay has been delayed in joining up with Preston North End ahead of his season-long loan at Deepdale and will instead carry out the final stages of his rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre before joining the Lilywhites later this month.

Ramsay, who joined Liverpool from Aberdeen last summer, saw his debut season cut short in February after undergoing knee surgery.

However, Ramsay may not be the only full-back departing the Reds on a temporary basis with 19-year-old left-back Luke Chambers reportedly attracting interest from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, who are managed by former Anfield favourite Xabi Alonso.

Chambers, who impressed as he helped Kilmarnock avoid relegation from the Scottish Premiership last season, is likely to be assessed by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp upon his return to the club this summer before a decision is made on his immediate future.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Williams will be in line for his Aberdeen debut on Wednesday when they face Turriff United.

With the transfer window not shutting until September 1, the Reds' loan contingent is expected to grow in the coming weeks with James Balagizi, Jarell Quansah, Harvey Blair and Layton Stewart some of the names that could seal a temporary switch away from the club.
