Liverpool FC's Champions League final blank vs Real Madrid hands Man City another record

Much is being made of Liverpool's three goalless finals in a season that could have offered a quadruple but has ended up in a domestic cup double.

Liverpool underwhelmed in their Champions League final on Saturday as Real Madrid did what they did against Manchester City and soaked up the pressure before delivering the sucker punch. There's no shame in losing to these European experts, especially as Thibaut Courtois produced nine brilliant saves to keep Liverpool out.

Jurgen Klopp's side will parade their Carabao Cup and FA Cup on Sunday, despite failing to add the Premier League or Champions League, and they will bat away any criticism that their two trophies both came from penalty shoot-out wins following goalless games. After another blank in Paris, City have an extra reason to smile as it has secured them a notable Europe-wide record for their season.

With Liverpool failing to score against Real, they ended their season on an impressive 147 goals in all competitions. However, that fell three goals short of City's 150 that was sealed with the final day comeback vs Aston Villa last weekend.

As Liverpool couldn't add to their 147, City can claim this position as Europe's top goalscorers as another sign of encouragement in their search to dominate the continent as well as the domestic picture.

Behind Liverpool were Bayern Munich on 143 goals, Chelsea with 122 and Champions League winners Real on 119. City beat all of those sides without a recognised striker.

Breaking down the goals, City had 18 players on the scoresheet this season, with Riyad Mahrez (24), Kevin De Bruyne (19), Raheem Sterling (17), Phil Foden (14), Gabriel Jesus (13), Bernardo Silva (13) and Ilkay Gundogan (10) all reaching 10 or more goals for the campaign. 99 goals were scored in the Premier League, 29 in the Champions League, 16 in the FA Cup and six in the Carabao Cup.

With Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez joining the club in the summer, City will fancy their chances of repeating this success next season.
