A Liverpool FC fan has died suddenly after falling ill minutes before Liverpool's Champions League match against Benfica at Anfield.
Emergency services rushed to the man's aid on Wednesday as stewards and fellow supporters desperately tried to help him. But despite the best efforts of paramedics the man sadly died.
The ECHO understands the man fell ill just 20 minutes before kick-off and was taken to hospital. The club confirmed the tragic news in a statement this morning as they offered condolences to the man's family.

A Liverpool FC Spokesperson, said: “It is with great regret that Liverpool Football Club can confirm that a supporter who was taken ill ahead of last night’s fixture against Benfica has sadly passed away.
“First and foremost, the condolences and the thoughts of everyone at the club are with the supporter’s family, loved ones and friends.
“We would like to thank the emergency services for their heroic efforts in providing urgent care and our appreciation to our medical professionals, stewards and all supporters in the vicinity of the incident for their assistance.”
The club tweeted: "It is with great regret that we can confirm that a supporter who was taken ill ahead of last night’s fixture against Benfica has sadly passed away. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with the supporter’s family, loved ones and friends."
