Liverpool FC drop Man City selection hint as World Cup players return to training

Liverpool could welcome back some of their World Cup stars to face Manchester City this week, including England pair Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool travel to the Etihad to face City in a hotly anticipated Carabao Cup clash, with both sides set to be without some key players due to their World Cup exploits.

City's Julian Alvarez and Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate definitely won't be involved after featuring in the World Cup final on Sunday, however other players who exited the tournament at earlier stages could make their returns.

England were beaten at the quarter-final stage, with City's five Three Lions not expected to be involved this week. Jack Grealish, for example, has been posting social media updates from New York in recent days, while the Blues' Portuguese and Dutch players have also been taking some time off after their quarter-final exits.

Over at Liverpool, though, England duo Henderson and Alexander-Arnold were pictured back in training this week, along with Brazilians Alisson and Fabinho and Uruguay's Darwin Nunez.

Jurgen Klopp has hinted that all could be available - although Alisson may be benched for their cup goalkeeper Caoimhim Kelleher - and their presence in training increases the chance of featuring at City. Also in training were Mo Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino Andy Robertson and Thiago Alcantara, who didn't play at the World Cup.

Virgil van Dijk has also been back in Liverpool training, although he was absent on Monday and Klopp has already confirmed he doesn't expect to play the Dutchman against City as his fitness is managed.

Speaking on Friday, Klopp said: "There’s a chance, of course – they train already. Henderson is already training here. Virgil is training here but I don’t think we will try that. Hendo we will see, Trent we will see.

"I hope we all get through it and we all know in England, and in Europe in general, there’s kind of a virus going around, so we hope we can stay out of that."
