Liverpool fans make feelings clear about national anthem being played at Anfield

Liverpool fans have taken to social media to react to confirmation of the national anthem being played at Anfield before kick off in the match against Brentford on Saturday evening.

The Reds believe they have been put in an impossible position by the Premier League as they 'strongly suggested' the anthem was played - despite strong opposition from some supporters.

It will be played this weekend to mark the coronation of King Charles III and the Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey, and provided a list of activities for clubs to be involved in.

The anthem will be played just before kick off in the 5.30pm kick off on Saturday when the players and officials will gather around the centre circle. Liverpool have held discussions with many stakeholders this week and are aware there is strong opinion against playing the national anthem.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter to express their views on the matter: "Disappointing that the club has bowed to the pressure to play the national anthem, but it will be drowned out by the booing anyway."

This Reds supporter thinks the fans have been 'hung out to dry': "Hanging the fans out to dry there, making them the story. Bad form."

Another Liverpool fan doesn't think booing is the right way to go about it: "Don't get it why is one event upsetting so many of us I keep reading "I'm booing" , "I don't agree", "we're being forced to sing NA" . I personally don't feel booing is the way to go, I also feel no pressure to take part."

'Terrible' decision from the club to play the national anthem at Anfield, according to this fan: "Terrible decision Liverpool. You know it will be booed."

This Reds supporter believes the 'bad look' for the club could have been avoided: "Awful decision - it’s not wanted at Anfield & the inevitable booing will create a bad look for the club. Could’ve been avoided. That said if I was there I would also boo it."

Playing the anthem an hour before kick off was one idea this Liverpool fan had to avoid any problems: "Play it an hour before the game. Means they can tick the box saying they played it and it doesn’t get the reception it inevitably will if they play it any nearer the KO."
