Liverpool fan who would 'do anything for anyone' made specific coffin request to family

A Liverpool fan who would "do anything for anyone" made a very specific request to his family before he was cremated.

Stanley Riley was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer around five years ago, and an operation was successful in removing the cancer. However in November 2021, the cancer had returned and he was given a 12 month terminal diagnosis.

The 73-year-old died on July 15 with his family paying tribute to "the nicest man anyone could ever meet". Stanley's family, including his wife Julie and children Claire, 32 Lauren, 30, and Shaun, 22, as well as grandchildren Ella, 10, Jace, 3, and Maddison, 9 months, described the beloved grandad as "always caring".

A massive lifelong LFC fan, Claire said her dad's attic was "absolutely full" of match day programmes from games at Anfield over the years. Also as an avid reader of the ECHO, Mr Riley requested to be laid to rest with a copy of the paper.

Stanley grew up around Smithdown, working by trade as an upholsterer on Brunswick Dock before going on to work at Liverpool John Lennon Airport where he retired.

Claire told the ECHO: "He was just the nicest man anyone could ever meet. Everyone always complimented the way he was.

"He would do anything for anyone. Even just little things like he would always bring all the neighbours bins in round where he lived- just things like that.

"He just cared, he wanted to make sure everyone was always okay."

Stanley's funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 26 at Springwood Crematorium for 11.30am. His family have asked for mourners to wear traditional funeral attire, but they don't mind if people would like to wear LFC shirts to remember Stanley, who was a massive Reds fan.

The wake will then be held at the Hillfoot in Hunt's Cross, where Claire says all are welcome to remember her dad's life.
