Liverpool drivers pulled over by Merseyside Police's new Tesla car

A new Tesla police car was "turning heads" as it was spotted pulling drivers over in Liverpool.

People in the city spotted the new police car on Tuesday, October 11, as it was driven around Liverpool City Centre and East Lancashire Road. The navy Tesla Model Y, complete with reflective yellow wrapping and the police logo, was seen pulling over drivers in the city.

A number of people took to social media to say they spotted the vehicle and commented on how "smart" it looked.

Merseyside Police's Roads Policing Unit explained how they had the Tesla "on a test". A spokesperson from Merseyside Police confirmed it was on a trial basis to asses the vehicle for different roles.

The post said: "We currently have this cool looking Tesla on test. It’s certainly been a head turner so far. How many top up charges do you think we will need in a shift?"

CO Dave Lyons replied to the tweet and said: "The on-site chargers at Rose Hill are particularly slow. Would take 20 hours to charge from flat. Hope the ones at the OCC are a little quicker."

Another replied: "You won't need to charge during the shift - just before - and I can't wait to see the video of a boy or girl racer thinking they can outrun you, my hubby has a Tesla and we have said we think police should have them."

Martin said: "One per shift at most. I'm a driving instructor have an electric car, work eight hours a day and the car still has about 50% battery left. Plug it in overnight and it's back to 100% for the next day and mine has a smaller battery than Tesla so you'll have more range. Oh and they're fast!"

It's unknown how long the force will be testing the vehicle for or if they will become a permanent addition to the force's fleet.
