Liverpool dealt Manchester United blow as youngsters lose ground after defeat

Liverpool's U21's fell to a 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday evening to cap off a disappointing day for the Reds following the first team's 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

Luca Stephenson gave Barry Lewtas' side the lead within four minutes and his side looked like they were set to continue the good form which saw them beat PSG's U21 side in the Premier League International Cup on Wednesday. However, two goals from Joe Hugill saw United come back to win the match 2-1.

Stephenson's opener was well taken, with the 19-year-old midfielder curling in a shot from the edge of the penalty area following a set piece. Hugill levelled on 20 minutes and both sides exchanged blows before Liverpool were denied a second half penalty following a potential foul on Stephenson.

However, it was deemed to have been a foul by the Liverpool man and seconds later United were ahead, with Hugill adding his second of the match to see United take the lead. Liverpool missed a late chance through Melkamu Frauendorf as they could not find an equaliser.

The Reds made the short trip to Leigh Sports Village hoping to bounce back from their last defeat in PL2, with the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham last Sunday fresh in the memory. They have a chance to bounce back right away, though, as they face Braga in midweek before hosting Crystal Palace next weekend.

They currently sit a single point behind Palace, who do have a game in hand over Liverpool. Lewtas' side remain in the mix for honours at the end of the season and are just five points behind Manchester City who currently top the league.
