Liverpool could 'grab the attention' of Bruno Guimaraes but Newcastle hold strong hand

Liverpool may have a ‘sniff’ at signing Newcastle fan favourite Bruno Guimaraes this summer, according to ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson. The Reds are one of many teams to have been linked with taking the Brazilian away this summer.

Bruno has enjoyed a brilliant spell at St James Park and helped Eddie Howe’s side get into the Champions League this season - but Johnson believes Liverpool could still steal the midfielder.

“If you’re playing for Newcastle United in the Champions League, then that’s a bit difficult to give up. I don’t know whether he sees himself at Newcastle in the long-term, but any time that a club like Liverpool comes in for you, then it’s always going to grab your attention.” Johnson said in an interview with Betfred.

Guimaraes had a combined tally of 10 goals and assists this season for the Magpies and was a major factor in the side's success. Johnson thinks that playing in Europe’s premier competition may keep Bruno on Tyneside next season, however.

“However, in regards to a move this summer, all the best players want to play in the Champions League so he may want to stay at Newcastle United for that reason.”

The former Liverpool player still feels that somehow Liverpool could tempt the midfielder away from St James Park this summer though.

“I still believe that Liverpool will have a sniff because it’s Liverpool after all and they’re going to be back in the Champions League themselves sooner rather than later.”

According to the latest reports, Newcastle look set to make Bruno their highest paid player in history this summer when they offer him a new contract.

Guimaraes loves the club and went on record last year in an interview with Sky detailing his ambitions at Tyneside, “I love playing here, I love to bond with the fans, and I want to become a legend here." Bruno said.
