Liverpool coach John Achterberg has been charged with breaching Football Association rules after the 2-1 win against Newcastle United.
Fabio Carvalho’s 98th-minute winner at Anfield last Wednesday (August 31) was the cue for both sets of backroom staff to clash on the touchline as the Reds secured a last-gasp victory after falling behind to Alexander Isak’s first-half effort.
Achterberg was caught on camera gesturing towards the Newcastle bench as Liverpool and their fans wildly celebrated a late winner in a game that saw the visitors accused of lengthy and persistent time-wasting.

The long-serving goalkeeper coach has now been charged over his behaviour and has until Thursday to respond.
An FA statement read: “Coaches from Liverpool FC and Newcastle United FC have been charged with breaching FA rule E3 during their Premier League fixture on [Wednesday] August 31.
“It is alleged that the behaviour of John Achterberg and Daniel Hodges in the 98th minute of that game was improper and that the Liverpool coach also used abusive and/or insulting gestures.”
Liverpool’s celebrations stemmed from their belief that Newcastle were attempting to waste time as often as possible throughout the second half, while the Magpies were aggrieved that a further three minutes were tagged on to the initial five by referee Andre Marriner.
