Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson reacts after Man City beat Reds to title

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson congratulated Manchester City on winning the Premier League title but admitted his side were "disappointed" to miss out on the final day of the season.

The Reds almost beat City to the crown after coming from behind to earn a 3-1 win over Wolves at Anfield. But City produced a comeback of their own to win 3-2 at the Etihad after Aston Villa took a shock two-goal lead.

The result ended Liverpool's hopes of a historic quadruple but they still have the Champions League final to come to finish the campaign with three trophies, as Henderson has the task of picking up his troops ahead of the showdown with Real Madrid in Paris next week. Speaking to Sky Sports after the dramatic final day, Henderson said: "Obviously we’re a little bit disappointed, we’ve got to say congratulations to City of course, but then focus on the job next week.

"A huge match against a really good side and we’ll have to be at our very best if we want to come away with the trophy. We didn’t play particularly well, as well as we can [against Wolves]. To fall behind it’s never easy, but in the end we came through really well and scored some good goals, and found a way to win.

"We didn’t really know what the score was [at City], we heard from the fans but I lost count. We did what we had to do to win the game and we got the job done. We’ve been in this position before but it's tough.

"Unfortunately it wasn’t enough. We can’t have too many issues, we did absolutely everything all season right until the last day. If you had said we’d be here in January, we would have bit your hand off. I’m very proud of the boys but it’s over yet."

Wolves took the lead as early as the third minute through Pedro Neto's goal before Sadio Mane pulled Liverpool level midway through the first half. Meanwhile at the Etihad, Matty Cash's header gave Villa the advantage over City, before ex-Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho doubled their advantage early in the second half.

Liverpool frantically chased another goal and eventually got one when substitute Mohamed Salah put them ahead, by which time City had pulled level. Pep Guardiola had made an inspired substitution of his own, throwing on Ilkay Gundogan who headed home to start the City revival, before Rodri's long-range drive levelled the scoring.

Gundogan then completed the comeback when he sidefooted home Kevin De Bruyne's shot across goal. Andy Robertson added a late goal to ensure Liverpool's victory but it mattered little as City held on to claim the title with Guardiola breaking down in tears at the final whistle.

It was City's fourth title in five seasons and the second time they have beaten Liverpool to the crown with just a point between them. Liverpool now turn their attentions to the Champions League final next Saturday but will be concerned over the fitness of midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who was taken off at half-time with an injury.
