Liverpool bank transfer windfall for midfielder who never made first-team debut

Liverpool have banked a fee worth €800,000 (£688,000) after seeing their sell-on clause for Allan Rodrigues de Souza become active.

Allan, who joined the Reds for £500,000 from Internacional back in 2015, failed to make a single appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side due to work permit issues and was subsequently loaned out to six separate clubs before being sold to Atletico Mineiro in 2020.

A £3.2million deal was struck three years for the 26-year-old to return to his native country and a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of this agreement. Allan has helped Atletico Mineiro to seven trophies since putting pen to paper on a permanent contract, most notably claiming the Brazilian league title in 2021.

Such impressive performances have resulted in Brazilian giants Flamengo registering an interest in the ex-Liverpool man, resulting in a reported €8.2m transfer being agreed for his services. This has therefore resulted in the Reds receiving a sum of €800,000, despite recent attempts for this clause to be removed.

Brazilian journalist Venê Casagrande recently revealed Atletico Mineiro 'called Liverpool' to ask if they would consider giving up their ten per cent entitlement, though the club saw this request 'denied'. This development is said to have 'bothered' Allan, who feared his transfer being held up over due to financial agreements.

Opening up on his exit from Liverpool last year, Allan told the Athletic he had hopes of one day returning to Anfield. He said: “Today? Yes, of course. I have great memories of the club, the supporters and the atmosphere of Anfield on a match day. It is still a dream and if it was down to me I would return to the club one day.

“I hope to return to England or a strong European League. I want to be recognised in Europe in the same way I am now recognised in Brazil."
