Liverpool appoint new club doctor after extensive search

Liverpool have appointed former England national team staff member Jonathan Power as their new club doctor.

Power, who hails from West Derby, will join up with the Reds squad in Dubai for their warm-weather training camp before assuming full responsibilities in early 2023.

He was with the Football Association for almost 10 years in a variety of roles and had also previously been at Brentford and worked with both codes of rugby in Leeds.

Power is currently a consultant in sports and exercise medicine at the Centre for Sports and Orthopaedic Medicine in Bermuda while also the Director of Sport and Exercise Medicine at the Yorkshire Sports Exercise Clinic.

Liverpool have been to make an appointment since Dr Jim Moxon departed in August after two years in the role.

Head of Academy Medical, Bevin McCartan, and club physician Sarah Lindsay have temporarily assumed the primary medical duties with the first team this season and have travelled to matches. Andreas Schlumberger, Liverpool's head of recovery and performance, has also taken on extra responsibilities.

Schlumberger was among those involved in the process to appoint Moxon’s successor, as were Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and departing sporting director Julian Ward.

Power was with the FA between 2012 and 2021, where he worked as the England team’s performance medicine doctor and was also team physician with the youth teams that won the Under-17s World Cup and U19s European Championship side.

He was matchday doctor for Brentford between 2019 and 2021 and has also been club doctor for Leeds Rhinos rugby league team and Leeds Carnegie rugby union side.
