Liverpool and Tottenham's potential Champions League last-16 opponents

Tottenham completed a clean sweep for English clubs in the Champions League on Tuesday night, as they defeated Marseille 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome in France.

Spurs, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will all represent the Premier League in the knockout stage of this season's tournament, which resumes in the new year once the World Cup concludes. There are just eight games remaining on Wednesday.

As such, it's becoming clear which teams the four English clubs could face in the last 16. Tottenham were set to finish second in their Group D - potentially handing them a tricky tie - but a last-minute winner Pierre Emile Hojbjerg ensured they finished top of the table.

As clubs from the same country are not allowed to meet until the quarter-final stage and can't play their group-stage opponents again in the last 16, Tottenham could draw either Belgian side Club Brugge or Italian giants Inter Milan.

Antonio Conte's side will also be keeping an eye on Wednesday's games, as they will confirm which other teams are through. Potential opponents include AC Milan, Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain.

Liverpool, meanwhile, finished second in their group and will take on a table topper in the next stage. They could be drawn against Porto, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, RB Leipzig, PSG or Benfica. That means a possible repeat of last season's final against Real.

Chelsea and City have already topped their groups, although they each have one game remaining. They are both in a similar situation to Tottenham, with Chelsea facing a last-16 tie against Brugge, Inter, Eintracht Frankfurt, Leipzig, Shakhtar, Dortmund, Benfica or PSG.

City's potential opponents are Brugge, Inter, Frankfurt, Milan, Leipzig, Shakhtar, Benfica and PSG. The four Premier League clubs do not have to wait long to find out their fate, as the draw for the next round will be conducted in Switzerland on Monday.

As ever, the last 16 ties will be played in February and March. The quarter-finals are pencilled in for April and the last-four ties will take place the following month. This season's final will be held in Istanbul on June 10 - slightly later than usual due to the World Cup.

Keen observers of European football will also know that Arsenal and Manchester United have reached the knockout stages of the Europa League, while West Ham have progressed to the last 16 of the Europa Conference League after winning their group.

If Arsenal and Man Utd win their final group games against FC Zurich and Real Sociedad respectively on Thursday, they will progress to the last 16 of the Europa League. If they fail to do so, they could find themselves in the last 32 - also known as the play-off round.

That means they could face an eliminated Champions League club. Potential opponents include Ajax, Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, Sporting Lisbon, Milan, Salzburg, Leipzig, Shakhtar, Sevilla, Juventus and Maccabi Haifa. It's too early to predict West Ham's fate.
