Liverpool and Manchester United fans unite to show support for Cristiano Ronaldo

Liverpool and Manchester United fans came together in the seventh minute of the meeting between the clubs at Anfield tonight to show their respect to Cristiano Ronaldo after he announced the death of his baby boy.

Ronaldo and his partner Georgina Rodriguez shared the tragic news on Monday night, and it was confirmed on Tuesday morning that the Manchester United striker would play no part in the Premier League clash with Liverpool.

In a later statement, United also confirmed there would be a minute’s applause in the seventh minute of the contest at Anfield as a mark of respect to Ronaldo and his family. Both sets of players are also wearing black armbands.

When the seventh minute arrived, Liverpool and United supporters, across all four stands at Anfield, stood up and started a round of applause. The tribute lasted for the full minute as fans offered their support to Ronaldo and his family. Liverpool supporters sang the club's anthem, You'll Never Walk Alone. Gary Neville, co-commentating for Sky Sports, said: "It was a massive touch of class from Liverpool."

It came after Luis Diaz put Liverpool into a fifth-minute lead.

Ronaldo and Rodriguez were expecting twins. Their baby girl survived. Ronaldo, 37, and Rodriguez, 28, said "it is the greatest pain that any parents can feel" and that "only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness."
