Liverpool and Man City 'hold talks' with winger who was scolded by Virgil van Dijk

Although Liverpool have managed well in January with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane away at the Africa Cup of Nations, the club is expected to strengthen their forward line in the summer.

It's understood both West Ham United winger Jarrod Bowen and Leeds United star Raphinha are being tracked at Anfield, although another name has emerged as a possible option in the press.

According to Voetbal International (h/t the Mirror), both Liverpool and Manchester City have held talks with PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo with a view to a possible move in the summer.

The player himself has admitted there have been some 'very interesting clubs' in touch, although it 'looks like' he will sign an extension with the Eredivisie giants.

Nevertheless, with Bayern Munich also frequently linked with the 22-year-old, it would appear a big move is on the cards soon.

Here is a look at what all the fuss is about.

Exciting playing style

Gakpo is a product of the PSV academy and having made his senior debut in 2018, the fans who frequent Phillips Stadion have become well accustomed to his vibrant playing style.

The winger typically operates on the left flank and uses his close control and ability to change pace to leave defenders in difficulty.

Gakpo is comfortable burning around the outside of full-backs, but can also dip infield to link play too, making him a tricky player to pin down.

Standing at 179cm tall, he's also capable of mixing it physically, a trait that would no doubt be tested if he was to be dropped into the robust landscape of the Premier League.

"He has the potential to grow into a very complete player," said PSV boss Roger Schmidt said of Gakpo in April.

"Physically, mentally and he is reliable. Of course you should always look at the big picture, not just his last game. But if he continues to grow, he can become a top international player."

Impressive numbers

The focus on Gakpo has intensified this season because his productivity has gone through the roof.

No longer is he a young winger who is profligate in dangerous situations. The Dutch international takes care of the ball, takes an extra split second to make a decision and has become adept at finding the right pass.

Already this season he has notched 10 assists and six goals from 15 outings in the Eredivisie.

Gakpo has already surpassed his best assists tally for a campaign by three and is one strike away from levelling his goalscoring personal best too.

Burgeoning leader

As an academy prospect and a leader in attack, Gakpo already has a lot to contend with at PSV.

But at the start of the season, Schmidt thrust even more responsibility onto his young shoulders when he named the forward as the club's vice-captain.

"Cody knows the club inside out and loves PSV," said the manager in July when the decision was announced. "He can put his ideas across to his team-mates and will always find some extra energy to perform and achieve well."

The aforementioned figures would seem to indicate he's handling this new role well.

Knows all about Van Dijk

Gakpo has made four appearances for the Netherlands and has scored one goal.

He did get an earful from Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk in one of those outings though.

In the clash with Norway in September, the youngster was slow to come out after a corner and played Erling Haaland onside, who slotted home the opening goal.

Van Dijk turned to his left to bellow at Gakpo, who appeared oblivious to the impending danger.

"Indeed, we join and unfortunately Cody is the one who stayed behind," said the Liverpool stopper afterwards of the incident. "Can happen. Must not happen, but well: we actually have to do that better before the game."

Meanwhile, Haaland said he was 'surprised' he had so much space, with Gakpo a long way behind the next-deepest Netherlands defender.

Eventually the Dutch levelled the scores, with former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen making it 1-1 on the night.
