Australia out of T20 World Cup as England beat Sri Lanka by four wickets in tense SCG clash

Australia's Twenty20 World Cup title defence is over, knocked out of the tournament after England claimed a final-over win against Sri Lanka at the SCG.

Needing a victory to qualify for the semi-finals ahead of Australia, England chased down Sri Lanka's 8-142 with four wickets and two balls to spare to go into the final four.

After player of the match Adil Rashid's 1-16 proved crucial with the ball, Alex Hales hit eight boundaries in his 47 from 30 to set up the chase before a mid-innings collapse of 5-36.

But Ben Stokes was able to save the day for England, with his unbeaten 42 from 36 balls keeping in control late.

"A lot of credit goes to Ben Stokes," Jos Buttler told ABC Sport after the match.

"He's a man that takes a lot on his shoulders and really stands out in those situations … he's a guy that can win you a game with the bat, with the ball and in the field.

"He always wants to be the main man every game and we want him to score runs every game, but the nature of T20 cricket, that doesn't always happen.

"But what is for sure is that he's a proper match winner and he showed that in a different sort of light tonight."

The equation eventually got down to five runs from the final Lahiru Kumara over, before Chris Woakes cut the third-last ball for four with only two runs needed.

"It was a lot more nervy than it needed to be at one stage," Buttler admitted.

"But we found a way to get the job done."

At the expense of Australia, whose tournament was doomed from the moment they suffered an 89-run loss to New Zealand in their opening game.

Needing results to go in their favour ever since, Australia's match against England was washed out and they failed to make up the net run-rate deficit to reach the finals.

Wins over Ireland and Afghanistan to round out the group stage were not big enough, with the four-run victory over the latter on Friday night highlighting the hosts' scratchy form.

The result marks only the fourth time in the past 30 years that Australia have not progressed into the semi-finals of a World Cup in any format.

Sri Lanka offered some early hope to Australian fans when they reached 1-54 from the six-over powerplay, with England facing the prospect of needing to become the first team to win chasing at the SCG in this tournament.

Opener Nissanka Pathum led the attack, smashing five sixes in his 67 from 45 balls as he clipping deliveries off his pads and over the legside at will while also uppercutting Mark Wood over third man.

But when he was caught trying to take on Rashid, Sri Lanka struggled to find any momentum as they lost 5-25 in the final five overs.

England were then able to take control with Hales and Jos Buttler's 75-run opening stand from 7.2 overs, before Stokes rescued England after their own collapse.

"It was a fantastic start and it's just the kind of start you want in that kind of chase," Buttler told ABC Sport.

"For both teams I think, outside the power play it almost looked like the air went out of the ball.

"It was tough and I thought we dragged it back really well."

England finish second in the group and will likely face India in a semi-final in Adelaide on Thursday, provided India beat Zimbabwe in their last game.

New Zealand will likely take on South Africa at the SCG on Wednesday, assuming the Proteas are able to discard of Netherlands.

Look back at how all the action unfolded at the SCG.

We'll wrap things up here

Thanks very much for joining us on this blog.

Disappointment for Australia, of course, but the action doesn't stop there.

We'll be back for the semi finals - the line up we will learn tomorrow after the three matches to conclude Group Two take place.

But we do know that England will play the winners of Group Two in Adelaide and New Zealand will await the runners up at the SCG.

Thanks for joining us, we'll catch you again soon.

My thoughts entirely

Good on England

Australia got its selections wrong

Bad selections, poor decision making and trying to make Green an opener. No surprise to where it ended?! Steve Smith?

'I didn't enjoy that much': Jos Buttler

"I'm not a great watcher, so I didn't enjoy that much," Jos Buttler says after that nail-biting finale.

He pays credit to Ben Stokes.

"These sort of situations are what he's made for," he says of Stokes.

"I thought it was a fantastic over from Adil Rashid to change the momentum at the end of the power play," Buttler says of the real game changer for England with the ball.

He says he hopes he and Alex Hales are hitting their straps at the right time.

England have not played in Adelaide yet, which is where they play next.

But Buttler simply says his team is "excited" to play, whoever they end up facing - the runner up in Group Two.

Did Australia deserve to even get that close?

Australia didn’t deserve to play in the Finals - Poor selections - I’m disappointed, however my money’s now on New Zealand to win the World Cup this time.

- Don Voegt

I know I'm disappointed we didn't get to see England vs Australia.

The warm up matches might have said England were too good, but it would have been good to see them head to head.

'An amazing fight'

Here's the Sri Lankan skipper.

"It was an amazing fight, but still, I feel like we could have done better in the batting part," Dasun says.

"We gave a good fight in the last ten overs, I think they played well in the power play ... credit to Hales and Buttler."

Here's the final table

Australia's net run rate the key factor in their demise and the end of their reign as T20 World Cup champions.

England celebrates its heroes

Adil Rashid is player of the match

Well deserved too.

His sublime spell of bowling got England back into the game.

Rashid credits Ben Stokes with getting England over the line.

"That's T20 cricket," Rashid says, wearing his pads.

It sure is.

Australia are out of the T20 World Cup

Key Event

England wins by 4 wickets

As tense a victory as you're ever likely to see.

England have stumble dover the line thanks to a superb, 36-ball 42 from Ben Stokes - how often can that one man be the hero that England needs?

Sri Lanka made that unbelievably tense and did so well with their bowlers to bring it all back, but England, a batter down lest we forget with the injury to Dawid Malan, got over the line in the end.

Relief is the overwhelming emotion I'd imagine.

20th over - Lahiru to bowl the last

How are your nerves, folks?

England need 5 to end Australia's involvement in the tournament.

It's wide, Stokes has to reach for it and they're going to run two off the misfield at deep cover. Hasaranga injured himself and will hobble off.

3 off 5

A single to third man.

2 off 4

Chris Woakes has not batted in this tournament until today.

Incredible pressure.

Woakes edges the ball behind on the bounce to Mendis.

No run.

2 off 3

FOUR! Woakes smokes it to backward point!

ENGLAND WINS!

19th over - Kasun Rajitha

Chris Woakes is the new man in.

Still no Dawid Malan.

England's bench look very, very tense.

Stokes pushes to mid off, he wants two. Woakes says no! Just a single.

If it's a tie, apparently we'll have a super over. I don't need that kind of stress in my life.

Woakes fends into his groin, and then is rushed through for a single by Ben Stokes.

England need 11 from 10

Full toss - punched to long on and they get two.

9 off 9

WIDE! Stokes walked a little bit to the off side and then just watched the ball fly about 2cm wide.

Stokes punches down the ground and they'll take another two.

6 off 8

Wide full toss and Stokes picks out the fielder at short cover!

Clipped off his pads for a single to deep mid wicket.

CURRAN GOES! OH MY!

A slower ball bouncer, Curran walked to the off side, swung at the ball that flew down to fine leg and it's well caught by Kasun.

Curran out of 6 off 11.

England are on the brink!

Australia are close to making the semi's!

18th over - Lahiru comes back

Curran picks out the fielder at mid wicket. No run. Dot ball. Crucial.

Curran rides a rising ball and fends it backward of square, straight to the fielder! Another dot!

Good bowling, Curran can't get the ball away.

The Sri Lankan fans scream in approval.

It's suddenly 15 from 15.

Curran backed away, the bowler followed him and Curran dabs the ball over third man for 1.

Slower ball bouncer, Stokes gets a single to mid off.

Curran is on strike - there's a bit of a delay.

By Simon Smale

17th over - Maheesh is bowling out here

His final over. They've given him a slip too. All or nothing.

Stokes defends the first.

Through the bowler from Stokes and a single down to long on.

Long on comes up to mid on. The ball is arrowed in and Curran takes a single off his pads.

Wide! Great scrambling take from Mendis, but it's another run to the tally for England in the extras column.

Oh a reverse sweep from Stokes and he gets a glove on it to save himself from LBW.

Two off Stokes' pads backward of square.

Wide, Stokes exclaims after not making enough contact but they still got six off the over.

Maheesh is bowled out, 0-22 his figures.

16th over - Here comes Charith to bowl his first

It's the first time he's bowling all tournament.

FOUR! Stokes drives uppish past extra cover and gets four, but that was close to the fielder...

Stokes crashes out to deep point for a single.

Curran drives, fielded at cover.

He gets a single past the bowler at wide mid off.

Charith, from wide on the crease, bowls to Stokes, who pushes for a single to mid wicket.

And Curran does the same.

15th over - Dhananjaya has three at Sam Curran

Well, just one. He gets a single to mid wicket.

The fact that Sam Curran is out there to me suggests that Dawid Malan won't come out to bat unless it's absolutely necessary.

This could be very bad for England, who are capitulating here.

Stokes off the back foot square to point, no run.

Now a single down to long off.

England need 29 off 30.

OUT! ALI CHIPS THE BALL TO COVER!

Oh my word! That's a horrible shot and England are starting to teeter a little here!

Ali just offered that one up, very innocuous. Ali goes for a five-ball 1.

ENG 5-111

By Simon Smale

15th over - Dhananjaya will bowl another

Single to Stokes down to mid on.

Ali defends the next.
