The head of Turkey's election commission has declared Recep Tayyip Erdogan president again after voters took to the ballot box for a historic runoff on Sunday. - The head of Turkey's election commission on Sunday declared President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the winner of a historic runoff vote that will extend his 20-year rule until 2028.
- Erdogan won the presidency with 52.14% of Sunday’s vote. His opponent Kilicdaroglu received 47.86%, with 99.43% of all ballots counted.
- Voter turnout on Sunday was over 85% according to Turkish news agencies Anadolu and Halk TV, just lower than the 87% of voters that participated in the first round of voting.
- Before the official results were announced, Erdogan declared himself the winner of the election. In his home district in Istanbul he thanked cheering supporters for voting and told them: “I'll be here until I'm in the grave.”
- Opposition leader Kilicdaroglu expressed “real sadness” about Turkey's future in a speech after Erdogan declared victory. Without conceding defeat, he said he would continue to lead the opposition.
- World leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have congratulated Erdogan on his election victory.
