Emmanuel Macron was elected to a second term as French president on Sunday with 58.2% of the vote, according to an estimate from the Ipsos polling institute. Voter abstention was put at 28%, the highest in 50 years. Read FRANCE 24's live blog to see how all the day's election coverage unfolded.

Macron, who topped the first round of the election on April 10, is the first president to win re-election since Jacques Chirac in 2002.

Le Pen, who is projected to have won 41.8% of the vote, was making her third run for the presidency.

Some 48.7 million were registered to vote, but turnout was even lower than in the first round, when one in four abstained from voting.
