Best-selling manga pirate adventure One Piece is receiving a live-action adaptation on Netflix.
Spawning from the manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda in 1997, the One Piece anime has aired more than 1,000 episodes since it began two years later. There have been numerous feature length films too, but this will be its live action debut.
Given this vast amount of source material, it’s little surprise that Netflix has chosen to tell its version over eight episodes. Here is everything you need to know about One Piece’s latest iteration.

What will be the plot of One Piece?
Similar to other adaptations, One Piece will focus on Monkey D. Luffy, a teenage boy who gains a rubber body after eating Devil Fruit. Monkey will set off on a quest, along with swordsman Roronoa Zoroto find the treasure known as One Piece and become King of the Pirates.
Given the characters that have been cast, it appears that arcs including Baratie, the Orange Town and Romance Dawn will be covered. However, no official synopsis has been released yet from Netflix.

Speaking to Vanity Teen about his casting as the lead character, Iñaki Godoy said: “To portray a character like Luffy is one of the greatest honours of my career and I know that this experience will stay with me forever regardless of the outcome.”
Who has created the series?
One Piece is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, who are the company behind Snowpiercer and Cowboy Bebop. The showrunners are Steven Madea and Matt Owens, who have worked on The X-Files and Agents of Shield. One Piece creator Oda has also been working behind the scenes, giving his opinion on casting and the production.
When will it be released?
One Piece will drop on Netflix on August 31, with eight episodes in its first season. No further seasons on the streaming service have been confirmed. You can view the teaser trailer here.
