Little Mix 's Leigh-Anne Pinnock is tipped to win a prestigious award for her powerful documentary on racism.
In Race, Pop & Power, which aired on BBC Three last year, the 30-year-old singer explored her painful experience as the only black member of the hugely successful girl group Little Mix.
The BBC documentary focused on her personal journey as she detailed the racism she encountered being a black woman in the music industry, and recalled being ‘treated differently’ from her bandmates Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirlwall and Jesy Nelson since they shot to fame on The X Factor in 2011.
Now, Leigh-Anne has been tipped by insiders to win an award at the inaugural Burberry British Diversity Awards after being nominated for her documentary.
The singer, who recently welcomed twins in August, is up for an award at the prestigious ceremony, set to take place in March, alongside fellow celebrities including comedian John Bishop and Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley.
Funnyman John and Olympian Tom have been recognised for their work supporting the LGBT+ community, while England footballer Marcus Rashford is shortlisted for his tireless campaigning for free school meals.
Loose Women panellist Denise Welch, as well as footballer Jamie Carragher and Strictly Come Dancing champion Rose Ayling-Ellis have also been nominated at the upcoming ceremony.
Leigh-Anne’s critically acclaimed documentary shed light on her experiences in the music industry, and in the short film, she opened up about the racism she faced while a member of one of the biggest girl groups of all time.
She admitted she was made to feel like the “token black girl” in the band and the colour of her skin was being used “to define my image within the group”.
Back in November, Leigh-Anne won an award for her compelling documentary, as Race, Pop and Power scooped an honour at the annual Ethnicity Awards.
“This is an incredible award and I want to thank my amazing fans who are so supportive and inspire me everyday to wake up and keep fighting for change,” she said in her acceptance speech.
Burberry British Diversity Awards founder Linda Riley said it was an honour to recognise such inspirational figures.
“Celebrities like Leigh-Anne Pinnock, John Bishop and Tom Daley are fantastic role models and are incredibly deserving of their nominations,” she stated.
June Sarpong will host the 2022 British Diversity Awards at London's Grand Connaught Rooms on 10 March.
