Little girl spills orange juice into a woman’s Chanel bag on a flight to France. 18 years later, their paths cross again: ‘It’s My Roman Empire’

Those “small world” moments have made us all question at least once if we’re living in a simulation. But this French woman’s family story with a Chanel bag lady is officially taking the crown for the most unbelievable full-circle.

TikTok creator Maudeline (@maudelinee) has captivated over 2.8 million viewers with her small world story that actually spanned two continents. She shared a two-part saga involving a designer bag, a cup of pulp-filled orange juice, and a coincidence that spanned two decades. It serves as a charming (and initially cringeworthy) rebuttal to the idea that a bad first impression is a permanent one.

The pulp-filled Chanel disaster at 30,000 feet

The “Roman Empire” of Maudeline’s family began 18 years ago on a flight from Paris to Shanghai. Maudeline’s sister, then just a child, made the classic first mistake of placing her orange juice on the armrest right as the plane was taking off. Upon ascent, the juice slid backward through the gap in the seats and landed directly inside the open Chanel bag of the passenger behind them.

The next moments were as messy as you’d imagine. Once the seatbelt sign turned off, the passenger approached Maudeline’s mother. Devastated, she said, “Excuse me ma’am, your daughter’s orange juice is in my Chanel bag.” The woman then spent hours in the tiny plane lavatory cleaning pulp out of her passport, wallet, phone, and keys.

Hilariously, Maudeline’s sister offered a 20-euro bill to the woman. Her mother also left her contact information if any damages needed to be covered. However, they assumed they’d never see the “Chanel Bag Lady” again.

The lunch in Tokyo that closed the small world gap

Fast forward ten years: the family had moved to Tokyo, Japan. While attending a lunch for French ex-pat moms, Maudeline’s mother heard a guest mention that her husband worked for Chanel. Even more surprisingly, she told her that they had previously lived in Shanghai, too.

The suspicion was immediate. But the confirmation didn’t happen until the mother walked into the woman’s home for a follow-up lunch. The first thing she saw in the entrance? A Chanel bag, still in tip-top shape. When the women were introduced, the Chanel Bag Lady acted as if they were total strangers. So, Maudeline’s mom decided to stay quiet to avoid an awkward confrontation.

The family couldn’t keep it in and confronted the Chanel bag lady

Eventually, the mother couldn’t “bite her tongue” any longer. During one of their hangouts, she asked the lady if she remembered the flight incident. The woman’s face reportedly went white as she confirmed, “Yes, that was me.” While she didn’t find the story particularly funny at first, the shared history became the foundation for an unlikely bond.

Today, Maudeline tells that the two women are “excellent friends” who go on an annual girlfriends trip together. The families remain close, and Maudeline’s sister has finally had the chance to formally apologize for the juice-soaked belongings of 2008.

A messy beginning doesn’t mean a messy end

Maudeline’s story is as entertaining as it is unbelievable. But it still eases the fear of embarrassing social mistakes. Because for her family, a 10-hour flight of cleaning orange juice out of a designer purse ended up with a lifelong friendship. It proves that sometimes, the best people in our lives enter with a splash… even if that splash is a cup of juice on a long-haul flight.

It seems that the Chanel Bag Lady has finally forgiven the sister for the orange juice. And her bag was still as good as 18 years ago. But if you’re served fresh juice on your next flight, maybe keep your drinks on the tray table. Or, at least keep your Chanel bags closed if you don’t want to spend the flight in the lavatory.
