Lisandro Martinez sends message to Manchester United teammates during Nottingham Forest clash

Lisandro Martinez has reacted to Manchester United going 2-0 up against Nottingham Forest within a matter of first-half minutes.

The defender has not yet featured for United since Argentina’s World Cup final win over France a week last Sunday. Defensive partner Raphael Varane was starting his first United game since tasting that sour defeat.

When asked on Friday about Martinez and his return, Erik ten Hag said he was still “celebrating in Buenos Aires”. Both he and Varane were given an extra week off after the World Cup final but it seems the summer signing is turning his attention back to domestic action, judging by his Instagram story.

Martinez watched Marcus Rashford open the scoring against Forest inside 19 minutes, the Englishman firing home a training ground routine from a corner. Three minutes later, Anthony Martial had doubled United’s tally when Wayne Hennessey couldn’t stop his shot finding the net despite getting a hand to the ball.

Martinez was clearly delighted with the quickfire double and took to Instagram to share his satisfaction at seeing his teammates performing well in their first Premier League game back after the mid-season break.

He posted a snap of his view of the TV screen which showed Anthony Martial’s celebration on what was a rain-soaked night at Old Trafford, tagging United's official account and adding a flexing-arm emoji and a red devil emoji. The centre-back would have been as equally relieved to see that Forest were denied a comeback goal on 40 minutes from Ryan Yates’ header.

His effort was chalked off by VAR after the ball had glanced off Willy Boly before going in, the defender standing in an offside position. Martinez is expected to be back for the New Year’s Eve trip to Wolves with Ten Hag saying on Friday he expects the defender back "soon".
