Lisandro Martinez has thanked Manchester United fans for his warm reception after a section of supporters held up an Argentina flag paying tribute to him.
The defender, who joined from Ajax in the summer, enjoyed a sensational winter as he helped his country claim World Cup glory in Qatar. Martinez, 24, was an unused substitute in the final but still enjoyed a hero's welcome at Old Trafford before his side's 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday.
A section of fans unfurled an Argentina flag with a knife through the centre, which may be perceived as disrespectful without context. However, this was a nod to Martinez's nickname, which is 'The Butcher', and he was taken aback by the unique gesture. The centre-half's nickname derives from his aggressive style of play and was handed to him whilst he plied his trade in Amsterdam.
